Artists in Residency at Providence School

Artist Residency Program in Providence School – This program was established in 2006 at Providence School, a year-round Ventura County Court school, managed by the Probation Department.  The Arts Council works with the Office of Education and the Probation Department to provide educational services to minors incarcerated in the Detention and Commitment Housing Areas within the Ventura County Juvenile Justice Facility in Oxnard.  Using various arts disciplines, artists work directly with the students to impart life skills such as tolerance, cooperation, cultural authenticity, self esteem, self expression, and mutual respect through disciplined activities.

Ventura County’s representative to the State Poetry Out Loud Competition came from Providence School one year, and poetry remains a strong program at the school. In 2015 the first Volume of original poetry and drawings was published by the Ventura County Office of Education.

The students have learned to play different musical instruments, such as violins; painted murals at the facilities; and act out plays for an in-house radio show.  There is an open Call to Artists to participate in this program.
